Behind the scenes of pursuing a dream
Film Trailer
The Film
Chasing The Bear is a comedy documentary about a young director called Ted and his journey to make his first feature film, based on his experiences in both London and Los Angeles.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
In 1995, after my first job as a runner at Ealing Studios, I decided that I wanted to be a film director. Ever since then, I have been working towards that goal. One day in 2008 I decided, why not take my experience and create a comedy documentary about my career-to-date and the industry as a whole. It includes entertaining thoughts and amusing projects. It is an insight into the process and it also contains some funny things that happened...a road trip for one.
Chasing The Bear was made with the help and support of my girlfriend and a number of friends on a tiny budget. Enjoy!
PRODUCTION NOTES
Pre-production: It took a week to translate the initial idea into a script. With approximately 30 hours of footage, the film was combination of existing film footage, new footage, reconstructions, photos and anything else I could get my hands on.
I have a lot of experience in working with features, documentaries, commercials, corporate videos, and fictional shorts. The crew would shoot anywhere that we could take a camera, whether on top of a mountain or more likely in a film studio. We used any resources we could!
Production: The actual format of the film is a complete mixture. Some was even shot on s16mm but mostly the film was shot on 1080p on an HD camera. I had a clear vision in my head of what we needed and so did my editor, Simon. This was fortunate as we were on a very tight budget.
Post-Production: When I walked into Motherlode in Fulham and I said, we have a limited time, let's begin. I'll never forget the look on my editor's face. He made me write out every detail on a white board before we began. Editing is a lengthy process and it was a struggle to fit in editing around our 'bread and butter' projects but we continued to find a way...somehow.
15 years of chasing....
